Specialist Lining to an Effluent Tank in Warwickshire
A particularly challenging project from start to finish. On the survey of 2 effluent treatment tanks, it could be clearly seen there were issues present. The previous contractor who was employed to install an effluent tank lining had not followed correct preparation and application methods. These steps are vital to ensure GRP adheres efficiently.
Although the tanks appeared to look good, once hydro-testing was carried out, water began flooding through the joints that had been banded together using GRP. From Specialist Lining Services by Eurotank point of view, we are not keen on the idea of patchwork inside a storage tank. By far the most preferable option is to create a new effluent tank lining and effectively build a tank within a tank. Thereby we can be sure that no liquid can escape from the tanks. It was also noted that structural integrity of the galvanised steelwork may pose some very slight movement. This would need to be addressed with the effluent tank lining system.
The Solution?
To still use GRP! However, this time the correct GRP lining process would be followed. The tanks were grit blasted to open up the matting and remove the waxy surface from the top of the existing GRP panels. We would then apply 2 layers of matting over all joints and leading edges, followed by 2 layers of matting and a surface veil over the rest of the walls. The floor was given 2 layers of woven roving and a layer of matting to give immense strength to the floor, whilst also forming a strongly built ‘tank within a tank’.
Both tanks were resin washed(coat of coloured resin) to fill any pinholes in the laminate. Once dry, the tanks were sanded and any imperfections addressed before application of the final flow coat which is to protect the laminate. To help aid with the structural integrity, SLS applied pure polyurea at a thickness of 4mm to the structural steels. The effluent tank lining was given a 20 year warranty.
