External Epoxy Mastic Coating System to 5 Fuel Tanks

External Fuel Tank Refurbishment Using Epoxy Mastic Coating

Our client, a local fuel supplier in Essex had 5 storage vessels requiring some much-needed external refurbishment. Large amounts of single pack paint had been applied over the existing coatings. Consequently trapped water between the various layers of coatings caused the paint to peel. Epoxy Mastic coating was considered the best option.

Preparation and Method

The sensitive location meant we were unable to grit blast the vessels back to bare steel.  Manual preparation was the only method available to us. Due to the fuel tanks being full, using grinders for the preparation was not possible either. A high pressure jet wash was chosen to remove the existing failed coatings. Following this the site team would need to manually prepare and feather in the existing coating so when the new system was applied it would look as smooth as possible. Non-sparking tools were used due to the vessels containing fuel. These included air sanders, needle guns and brass abrasive wheel.

Choosing the correct protective coating system was essential.  A surface tolerant two pack epoxy Mastic coating was used to prevent further corrosion & reactions between the existing coating. This offers excellent adhesion for poorly prepared surfaces and excelled anti corrosion properties.

The first coat of the Epoxy mastic contains Aluminium pigments to help with the corrosion barrier. A subsequent Epoxy Mastic coating was applied in a different colour to ensure complete coverage. Once the second coat of epoxy mastic had dried, operatives sanded smooth any imperfections before applying a UV stable water resistant 2 pack Polyurethane Acrylic top coat.

The Works took 10 days to complete from start to finish thus causing minimal disruption to our client. As well as offering an improved finish, the new system also me with a 10-year warranty against corrosion much to the delight of our customer.
