Wood Treatment Tank Lining

GRP Lining to a Leaking Wood Treament Chemical Storage Tank

Our customer owns a specialist wood treatment works. Two of their storage tanks were leaking products into their secondary containment. The tanks were potentially 35 years old but have done great to get to this age without major leaks! There was some evidence of extensive welding to the base however! Corrosion does form and covers up holes in the steel making these not visible internally. This makes it very difficult to find where a leak Is occurring. The only true way to find damage and areas that need repairing is by grit blasting. We always advise grit blasting when installing a new tank lining to prolong the life of your asset.

Grit Blasting Preparation

Grit blasting any tank is essential for ensuring the lining adheres permanently to the steel. Blasting removes all the corrosion from the surface whilst providing an etch. This is achieved by creating peaks in the surface of the steel, much like the surface of sandpaper! After grit blasting this tank, we found 8 holes in the steelwork in various places. Of concern was the fact a couple of them were around welds. Once the blasting was complete, all spent abrasive was vacuumed using our specialist Clemvac Air vacuum straight to the skip. We were now ready to install the wood treatment tank lining.

Installation of a Glass Reinforced Plastic Tank Lining

Installation of a Glass Reinforced Plastic lining was the best option. GRP will offer immense strength to the weakened steel structure. The lining will utilise the steel, following its already strong cylindrical structure thus giving it even more structural integrity. At the same time, it offers the corrosion protection and chemical resistance needed. GRP is still the best liner to install when your storage tank is suffering issues. Especially if it’s causing environmental & unwanted profit loss through unneeded loss of chemicals. A post-cured storage tank can be put back into service as quick as 48 hours after installation. One happy client on this project.
